Two incidents that occurred in the United States on the first day of the new 2025 have superficial similarities.
Investigators are trying to establish whether the terrorist attack in New Orleans on New Year's Eve is connected with the explosion of a Tesla Cybertruck near the Trump Hotel in Las Vegas.
The New York Times writes about this.
The investigation has not yet established the connection between the perpetrator of the terrorist attack in New Orleans and the person who rented the exploded car. But law enforcement still has one lead: the men chose soft targets and rented cars through the same budget car rental app, Turo.
“I have directed my team to ensure that every resource at federal, state, and local law enforcement is available to quickly conclude the investigation in New Orleans and ensure that there is no further threat to the American people,” President Joe Biden said in a brief statement to reporters at Camp David.
At a news conference, Sheriff Kevin McMahill of the Las Vegas Police Department said the investigation's primary theory is that the explosion was an “isolated incident,” but they cannot yet completely rule out a connection to the New Orleans attack.
The sheriff said the fact that both men were using the Turo app is simply “coincidence”.
Recall that on January 1 in New Orleans a pickup truck drove into a crowd during the New Year's celebration. The investigation established that the driver of the car was 42-year-old Shamsud-Din Jabbar, a US citizen from Texas who had served in the army for 8 years. After the terrorist died in a shootout with the police, an ISIS flag was found in his car.
