The Save America Political Action Committee, a new movement founded by former US President Donald Trump, began 2021 with tens of millions of dollars in bankroll. This money was donated to the organization by the Republican's supporters, CNN reports referring to the documents.
On the accounts of the organization – more than $ 31.1 million. It was created shortly after the November 2020 elections and raised all this money at a time when Trump accused his political opponents of electoral fraud and brought legal cases against them. The need for donations to “protect the elections” was part of the committee's positioning.
Under American law, such an organization can send money to candidates for political office, as well as pay for political travel and campaign staff. Of all the accumulated millions, Save America spent only a small part by the end of last year – about 200 thousand dollars.
It is noted that in total on the accounts of political committees associated with Trump and the Republican Party, there are about $ 59.8 million. The 45th president, the channel notes, still has a significant influence on the party's policy, although the US Congress is preparing new hearings on his impeachment case.
Earlier it was reported that Trump lost five lawyers who were developing a defense strategy for an impeachment case in the US Senate. The reason for the disagreement could be Trump's desire to build a defense on the fact that the presidential elections he lost were allegedly rigged, and not on the issue of the legality of impeachment after the expiration of the presidential term.
The impeachment process will begin after February 8. The resolution contains one article of the charge – incitement to rebellion. Trump became the first president in US history to be impeached twice.
On January 14, the U.S. House of Representatives voted to impeach Trump over the riots in Washington.
On January 6, Trump protesters stormed the Capitol Building and surrounded the Senate Hall. The Senate and the House of Representatives interrupted the meeting at which they planned to approve the results of the last elections. During the protests, the police detained almost 70 rioters, five people were killed.
