Jannik Sinner won the ATP tournament in Washington and thus celebrated the greatest success of his career to date. The 19-year-old Italian defeated the American Mackenzie McDonald in the final of the Citi Open after just under three hours 7: 5, 4: 6, 7: 5.
Sinner became the youngest ATP 500 champion since the introduction of this category in 2009. He replaces the German Olympic champion Alexander Zverev, who also triumphed in Washington in 2017 at the age of 20.
“I think I still have a lot of work to do,” said Sinner by no means wanting to rest on his success. “I still have to gain a lot of experience, keep working so hard and try to play important games and important moments in matches.”
The Italian is already in 24th place in the world rankings. The US Open, the last Grand Slam tournament of the year, will rise from August 30th in New York. It is not yet clear whether Dominic Thiem can make his comeback there.
