The European Commission has proposed extending the temporary protection status for those Ukrainians abroad. It is proposed to introduce it for another year.

As noted, the temporary protection status for Ukrainians can continue if the initiative is supported by the European Ministers of Justice and Home Affairs and the Council of the EU. In this case, temporary protection will be extended until March 4, 2026. As of today, almost 4.2 million people enjoy this status.

At the same time, the European Commission believes that refugees do not have the conditions for a safe return to Ukraine for permanent residence. And this is the main argument for continuing the status in the EU.
“Due to continued Russian attacks on civilian and critical infrastructure throughout Ukraine, there are currently no conditions for a safe and lasting return to Ukraine. The Commission considers that the reasons for granting temporary protection have not disappeared and that it should be extended for another year,” it said.
Recall that more than half of Ukrainians do not have the opportunity to save money “for a rainy day.” And almost every fifth person is forced to spend their savings.
