Temperatures nearly 40 degrees above normal in Antarctica

A new anomalous record was recorded on the Polar Plateau.

At the Italian-French research station “Concordia” in East Antarctica, a new heat record was recorded. The air temperature here on March 18 was only -11.5 degrees Celsius, although usually at this time the average temperature ranges from -40 to -50 degrees.

This was announced on Twitter by French meteorologist Etienne Kapikyan.

According to the researcher, the deviation from the norm by 40 degrees is extremely large.

“At the research station “Concordia” on March 18, the maximum temperature was -11.5 degrees Celsius, which is absolute heat record. This record was broken by more than 16 degrees (previous March 12, 2013 was -29.9 degrees Celsius),” he wrote.

The research station is located on the Polar Plateau at an altitude of 3220 meters above sea level, 1670 kilometers from the South Pole . It was discovered in 2005.

East Antarctica's unprecedented temperature was recorded after the US National Data Center reported that Antarctic sea ice had shrunk to less than two million square kilometers in late February for the first time since 1979 .

Recall, climatologists say that over the past few years, the air temperature has risen significantly, which has added two dozen warm days a year to us.
