Telegram may be fined for pirated copies of books

The Association for the Protection of Copyright on the Internet asked Roskomnadzor to bring the popular Telegram messenger to administrative responsibility for distributing pirated copies of books. This was reported by Vedomosti.

The reason for the publishers' appeal was the distribution of books by writers Boris Akunin and Mike Omer. It is noted that the messenger does not delete illegal copies and does not block the channel distributing them, even after the decision of the Moscow City Court. “The actions of Telegram Messenger LLP in this situation, in our opinion, fall under the signs of an administrative offense provided for in Part 2 of Article 13.41 of the Administrative Offenses Code of the Russian Federation,” the official statement said.

Telegram can be fined from 800 thousand to 4 million rubles. Pavel Katkov, owner of the Katkov and Partners law firm, said that Roskomnadzor can draw up a protocol on an administrative offense or issue an order to the company before drawing up a protocol.

Earlier it was reported that the Russian court fined Telegram nine million rubles. The company was found guilty of an offense related to the refusal to delete information prohibited in the country.
