The reason is clear. Due to the inability to communicate via WhatsApp or Messenger, people were looking for other ways to connect with loved ones, colleagues, and so on. And for this reason, they poured into Telegram.
According to Durov, the messenger's servers experienced a tremendous load, but did not shut down, continuing to work, albeit with some brakes (especially in the USA).
In 24 hours, Telegram's user base has grown by an incredible 70 million people. Pavel Durov himself admitted that this is an anomalous value. But he is glad that users chose Telegram, and not, say, Viber or some other messenger.
