The new Afghan government led by the Taliban (the movement is banned in Russia as a terrorist movement ) will appoint its ambassador to Moscow. This was stated by the official representative of the movement Zabiullah Mujahid in a conversation with RIA Novosti.
“We have a plan, especially for the current embassies, according to which we will appoint an ambassador in Moscow. This is a diplomatic step. Embassies and consulates are important for [building] relations, ”Mujahid said.
He did not specify the timing of the appointment and added that so far the movement has not received a list of conditions for its recognition from Russia. Nonetheless, the Taliban are counting on Moscow to recognize their government, as this will contribute to the development of relations, in particular, with the United States.
On December 23, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that in the issue of recognizing the Taliban authorities, one should proceed from the realities and act in concert with the international community. In addition, the decision to recognize the Taliban will depend on the development of the situation in Afghanistan.
