The inauguration of newly elected Taiwanese President Lai Ching is scheduled for May 20
Taiwan is on alert for Chinese military exercises after the inauguration of newly elected President Lai Chin-te.
This was reported by a senior security official on the island, writes Reuters.
According to him, Beijing usually begins such exercises in June.
The publication emphasizes that Lai, like current President Tsai Ing-wen, reject Beijing’s claims to sovereignty. Both say that only the island's residents can decide their future. Lai, now vice president, will be inaugurated on May 20.
“Since Lai's victory in the January election, China has continually put pressure on Taiwan, including coast guard patrols near a group of Taiwan-controlled islands off the Chinese coast and the opening of new air routes in the Taiwan Strait, to threaten aviation security.” , says the news agency’s website.
Director of the National Security Bureau of Taiwan Tsai Mingeng said that China is now trying to influence the policy of the new government of the island.
“What needs special attention is that after May 20, from June to November, China will be holding its regular military exercises. Are they using this hot season as an excuse to conduct some military exercises to further put pressure on Taiwan? the key point that the National Security Bureau is focusing on,” she emphasized.
Recall that according to Western media, China resumed military activity near Taiwan after Secretary of State Blinken left Beijing.
