Taiwan criticized the joint statement adopted by Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping before the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympics in Beijing. The island’s foreign ministry drew attention to the fact that the mentioned document confirms the principle of “one China”.

“We express a strong protest on this occasion,” the ministry noted, reacting to the mentioned gesture.

The Taiwanese authorities also reproached China for forcing other countries and international organizations to “take actions against their will.”

Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping held talks on February 4, which lasted almost three hours. As a result of the negotiations, a package of intergovernmental, interdepartmental and commercial documents was signed, and the leaders adopted a joint statement.
