Taiwan accuses China of 'psychological warfare' over mystery balloons

< p>Taiwan's Ministry of Defense accused China of waging psychological warfare against the island's inhabitants.

On Saturday, January 6, Taiwan's Ministry of Defense accused China posing a threat to aviation security and waging psychological warfare against the island's residents due to a recent series of hot air balloons spotted over the island

Reuters writes about this.

It is noted that since December 2023, the Taiwanese Ministry of Defense has reported several cases of Chinese balloons flying over the Taiwan Strait. The department says several hot air balloons flew over the island near major air bases this week.

Taiwan's Defense Ministry said in a statement Saturday that the balloons pose a “serious threat” to the safety of international aviation given their flight path.

“The balloons were part of China's gray zone tactics against Taiwan in an attempt to use cognitive warfare to influence the morale of our people,” the ministry said in a statement.

Reuters notes that the possibility of China using balloons for espionage became a global issue in February 2023 when the US shot down a Chinese balloon.

Recall that on January 3, the Taiwanese Ministry of Defense recorded three Chinese balloons over the island – they flew near the air base of the country's Air Force.
