According to him, the issue of energy supply is not political, but infrastructural.
The Hungarian side may sue over the decision Ukraine will stop transiting oil from the Russian company Lukoil. Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjártó said that such a decision is fraught with the security of energy supplies for his country and Slovakia.
Magyar Nemzet writes about this.
According to him, the issue of energy supply is not political, but infrastructural. Oil supplies to Hungary, according to Szijjártó, cannot be physically solved without supplies from Russia, because there is no other alternative transportation route, no other pipeline leading to Hungary from any other place that could supply sufficient quantities of oil.
“Thus, Hungary, Slovakia and the Czech Republic were exempted from EU sanctions on oil transportation. It is obvious that Ukraine's decision fundamentally threatens the security of energy supplies to Hungary and Slovakia. This is an unacceptable step on the part of Ukraine, a country that wants to be a member European Union and with one decision fundamentally jeopardizes the oil supplies of two European Union member countries,” Szijjártó said.
He also added that our state’s decision seems to violate the association agreement. Szijjártó stressed that in this case, the affected member state can immediately initiate a consultation procedure, where the European Commission is obliged to represent the country or member states, and if it is not possible to reach an agreement with Ukraine, then it is possible to create an arbitration tribunal and carry out the procedure within forty days.
“Even if in this case there is no solution, the European Union has the right not to fulfill obligations under the association agreement (for example, granting duty exemptions). The matter is still at the consultation stage,” he noted.
Recall that Szijjarto criticized Ukraine's decision to stop the transit of Lukoil oil to Hungary.
