Swiss professor warns of the danger of new strains of COVID-19

Immunology scientist, professor at the Federal Polytechnic School of Zurich (ETH Zurich) Sai Reddy predicts the emergence of new variants of the coronavirus, which, having a high level of infectiousness, will be able to avoid exposure to antibodies. In an interview with the SonntagsBlick newspaper, he announced the inevitability of mutation of the beta, gamma and delta strains of the coronavirus, which could complicate the fight against the pandemic next year.

The professor pointed out that the strains “beta” and “gamma” have already mutated, so they can partially avoid the effects of antibodies. The delta variant of the infection has not yet sfromated mutations.

According to Reddy, mutations are inevitable – “beta” and “gamma” will become more infectious, and “delta” will learn to avoid exposure to antibodies.

“This will be a big problem next year,” the immunologist said.

In his opinion, it is necessary to try as soon as possible to detect the mutated virus in case of its appearance, and the creators of vaccines must quickly adapt them.

The scientist believes that SARS-CoV-2 will become a companion of mankind for a long time, and only mass vaccination of people will help to cope with the threat.

Earlier it was reported that intimidation and forcing people to get vaccinated against coronavirus should not be, it is necessary to explain the benefits of vaccination. This was stated by Russian President Vladimir Putin during a meeting with representatives of the United Russia party.
