Netflix is already filming a television series based on the adventures of Anna Sorokina called “Inventing Anna” (“Inventing Anna”)

In the United States, a 30-year-old German citizen, the daughter of emigrants from Russia, Anna Sorokina, who posed as the heiress of a German millionaire and a socialite, received bank loans, lived on debt in luxury hotels and dined in expensive restaurants, was released. Two years ago, she was convicted of misappropriation of property and services through deception, but received a pardon.

Sorokina, who introduced herself to everyone in New York as Anna Delvi, is likely to be deported to Germany.

“She was everywhere. She had an extraordinary tendency to convince everyone to pay for her luxurious lifestyle, and she herself somehow incredibly managed not to pay the huge hotel bills,” said her friend, DJ El Di.

Sorokina claimed that her inheritance is 60 million euros and is in a trust fund created in Europe in her name. According to the prosecution, she also used fake financial documents to support her story.

Sorokina received an offerraft in one bank for 100 thousand dollars, and in total she appropriated money and services for more than 200 thousand.

In May 2019, a New York court found her guilty on eight counts of fraud in 2016-2017 and sentenced her to 12 years in prison with the possibility of early release four years later.

What Sorokina did

  • Tried unsuccessfully to get a loan of $ 22 million for her fund. To prove her worth, she produced fake bank statements. Since she never got the money, she was found not guilty for this episode.
  • She managed to get a temporary overdraft in the amount of $ 100 thousand from City National Bank, presenting fake evidence that she has foreign assets.
  • Within a month after that, Sorokina spent $ 55,000 on living in the luxurious 11 Howard Hotel, designer clothes, classes with a personal trainer and electronics.
  • One of the witnesses said that Sorokina asked her to book a hotel room in Marrakech for $ 7,000 a night with a pool and a personal servant. Sorokin was supposed to pay for all this, but her credit card did not work when she was checked out. As a result, the costs had to be covered by the witness herself – a total of about $ 62,000 over six days.

The press wrote a lot about the case, especially emphasizing Sorokina's reverent attitude to her own appearance. During the process, she demanded the services of a hairdresser, and one day she refused to appear before the court, because, in her opinion, she was not well-dressed.

The lawyer called her a victim of the glamorous temptations of New York life and said that she tried to make her way to a good life through manipulation.
