A group of biologists from Linköping University in Sweden have discovered why some people may have an irresistible urge to drink alcohol. The results of their research are published in the journal Science Advances.
Experts have found that there is a group of nerve cells in the brain that can make a person want to drink even when common sense tells them not to.
Scientists led by Professor of Psychiatry at the Faculty of Biomedical and Clinical Sciences Markus Heilig were able to come to such a discovery by conducting neurobiological studies on rats.
“We found that in a small group of nerve cells in the brain, there was a difference between the ability to restrain oneself, as did most rats, and the inability to stop,” Professor Heilig said in a university press release.
It has previously been reported that alcohol consumption is a key cause of alcoholism. If a person does not drink alcohol, even with all the risk factors and poor heredity, he will not develop this disease. However, different people perceive alcohol differently: some develop addictions, others do not experience any changes for a long time.
