The Swedish parliament is thinking about the country's possible accession to states that have announced their intention to boycott the upcoming Winter Olympics in China. Deputy Hampus Hagman has addressed the Swedish Foreign Minister Ann Linde with a corresponding proposal, according to the Russia Today TV channel.
The parliamentarian noted that several countries, including Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States, have decided not to send their officials to China during the Olympic Games. In his opinion, in this way these states have demonstrated that “they are not going to participate in the propaganda campaign of the Chinese Communist Party.”
Hagman also expressed confidence that Stockholm has reasons to declare a diplomatic boycott of the Beijing Olympics. As an example, he cited “the kidnapping of the Swedish citizen Gui Minghai” and “threats against Swedish politicians and journalists.”
The refusal of the United States to send officials to the Games became known on December 6, 2021. On December 8, Australia joined the diplomatic boycott of the Olympics in China. The Beijing Olympics will be held from 4 to 20 February 2022.
In turn, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbing said that Western countries are using the Olympic Games for political manipulation. He also stressed that these countries will pay the price for their erroneous actions.
The Beijing Olympics will be held from 4 to 20 February.
