Russia will have an advantage over NATO in the event of a large-scale war without prior notice in the immediate vicinity of Swedish territory. This was announced on Thursday, March 11, by the Swedish public broadcaster SVT. She refers to the report of the Total Defense Research Institute (FOI), which operates under the auspices of the country's Ministry of Defense.
According to the authors of the report, the North Atlantic Alliance has shortcomings in combat readiness, including a lack of maneuvers, the geographical dispersion of the member countries of the alliance and their different military capabilities. At the same time, we are not talking about the need to build up NATO forces in the future, but about increasing the efficiency of their actions, SVT notes.
“If there is little time for large-scale preparation, Russia will have a clear advantage in close proximity to us, primarily on land,” said Christer Pallin, head of the group that prepared the report. “The advantage can persist for quite a long time, at least until the United States can deploy large forces here, which will take at least several months,” he added.
Moscow's attack on the Baltic states through Belarus
The FOI conducted a military simulation to assess the balance of power between NATO and its partners vis-à-vis Russia. It was, in particular, about a simulated attack by Moscow on the Baltic states through the territory of Belarus. The findings of the research institute in 2020 remained the same – in comparison with the analysis of 2017 – despite the fact that the alliance has taken additional steps over the past three years to strengthen itself. “If Russia makes a swift attack on the Baltic, it will have a good chance of success,” Pallin said.
Overall, in the report “Military Capabilities of the West in Northern Europe 2020”, the FOI conducted a systematic assessment of the balance of power between the West and Russia. In the first part, experts analyzed the security situation in Northern Europe, NATO's joint preparations for collective defense, Western and Russian military capabilities, and the results of a military simulation. In the second part, the military potential of individual countries is highlighted in detail – Denmark, Norway, Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Germany, France, Great Britain and the United States.

“The possibilities of Russia for military aggression against the West are obvious, mainly in the next few years, given, on the one hand, the obvious but slow strengthening of the collective defense of the West, on the other hand, the expected plateau in the development of Russian military potential in the 2020s.” , – summarized in the FOI.
