In the next school year This year, Ukrainian will be offered as a second foreign language for study in schools in the federal state of Hesse in Germany.

The Ukrainian language in schools is being introduced due to a large group of about 20,000 schoolchildren from Ukraine who, after the full-scale invasion of the Russian Federation, became refugees along with their families and live in this federal state of Germany. In addition, more than 300 Ukrainian teachers are now teaching in schools in Hesse.
“We should not get tired of supporting Ukraine. We would like to offer many young people and teachers from Ukraine even stronger educational and career prospects based on their individual talents, including for rebuilding their own country, and also send a clear signal of solidarity in difficult times,” Armin Schwartz commented on this decision. Until now, it has been a problem for many Ukrainian young people that their move to Germany often results in them breaking their educational path. In addition to English, which is usually studied in Ukraine as the first foreign language, starting from primary school, Ukrainian refugee children must study a German language course in a short time. The only possible second foreign language for senior high school would be Russian, which, as the language of the enemy, is not a choice for most Ukrainians.
The introduction of Ukrainian as a second foreign language can lead to adequate training with the highest qualifications. Many skilled trades require a high school diploma, requiring proficiency in a second foreign language.
In Hesse, schoolchildren are offered a wide range of foreign languages - English, French, Latin, Spanish, Italian, Russian, Chinese, Polish, Arabic, Portuguese and Ancient Greek. The school Turkish language test is currently underway.
Let us remind you that conscious Ukrainians under occupation continue to fight for their identity – to speak Ukrainian and learn their native language. Of course, this greatly irritates the Russian occupiers.
