British PM agrees long-range missiles will be needed for Ukraine's decisive battlefield victory.
British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak promised to strengthen Ukraine's air defense system in the coming weeks and said that discussions were ongoing on providing the state with long-range missiles.The head of the British government said this at a joint press conference with President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky at a military base in Dorset.
Sunak said that the Ukrainian president informed him of the most urgent needs of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. In particular, we are talking about air defense systems and long-range missiles.
“And this is what we have been talking about lately, namely, how we can ensure air defensefor the protective Ukrainian population,” the British Prime Minister said.
In this context, he recalled that the state provided Ukraine with thousands of anti-aircraft missiles and air defense systems to shoot down enemy targets in the air.
“And we will continue to do this and more in the next few weeks,” Sunak assured.
He also referred to Zelenskiy and said, main battle tanks and long-range missiles are the most crucial .
The British prime minister said that his conversation with the Ukrainian president concerned plans for a decisive victory for Ukraine on the battlefield. Sunak said that long-range missiles would be needed for this, and conversations about them continue. The politician expressed the hope that Britain would take a leadership position on this issue.
Recall that Zelensky arrived on February 8 to Britain, where he met with Sunak, spoke before the country's parliament and met with King Charles III. The President said that the key topic of the conversation was defense cooperation. In particular, Zelensky told Sunak about the needs of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in weapons and military equipment.
The President also, in a speech to the British Parliament, called for the transfer of fighter jets. Later, a representative of the British prime minister said that the government was considering such a possibility, but a decision would not be made in the short term.
Sunak also promised that the UK would support Ukraine until it wins the war with Russia.
