Sudoku puzzle inventor dies in Japan
In Japan, the former head of Nikoli publishing house Maki Kaji, who invented the Sudoku puzzle, died, according to the Kyodo agency.
“Maki Kaji was known as the 'father of Sudoku' and is revered by puzzle lovers around the world,” the publisher's website said.
In July, Kaji stepped down as president of the company for health reasons. He died on August 10 in Tokyo, he was 69 years old. The cause of death was cancer of the bile ducts.
Recall that the first Sudoku appeared in the 1980s on the pages of a magazine published by Nikoli, which later brought the company worldwide fame. Meanwhile, the history of creating similar digital problems goes back to the distant past. It is believed that the progenitor of Sudoku was the Latin Square game, which was invented by the Swiss mathematician Leonard Euler.

Sudoku became very popular in the early 2000s. Cells with numbers began to be printed in newspapers instead of traditional crosswords. The first Sudoku World Championship was held 25 years ago.
