Strong quarter for Sony thanks to Playstation 5

by alex

Sony can look back on a successful quarter mainly thanks to the good business with its Playstation 5 game console. In the Christmas quarter, sales rose by nine percent to just under 2.7 trillion yen (21.4 billion euros). In terms of profit, there was a jump of 62 percent to the equivalent of around 2.9 billion euros. After the strong performance, Sony raised its forecasts for the fiscal year that will run until the end of March.

4.5 million PS5 consoles sold

Sony sold 4.5 million units of the new Playstation 5 console, which was released for Christmas. The demand was so high that the Playstation 5 was hard to come by. At the same time, online services related to the Playstation increased.

In view of the closed cinemas, Sony made less sales in the business with films and TV programs, but this also eliminated the marketing costs for theatrical releases. In addition, license revenues in the TV business and home video sales are increasing during the pandemic.
