Strikes on Russian air bases: analysts assessed the consequences

< p>The attacks could significantly undermine the power of the Russians.

Ukrainian drone strikes are usually carried out only on individual air bases in Russia. Ukraine's ability to attack three air bases in one series of strikes is a “noticeable shift in capabilities.”

This is stated in the report of analysts from the Institute for the Study of War.

According to ISW estimates, as of 2023, the Russian Federation had approximately 60 Tu-95 aircraft.

“If this aircraft loss is confirmed, the loss of approximately five percent of Russian Tu-95 strategic bombers in a single strike would be noticeable,” the report says.

Continuous Ukrainian attacks on Russian airfields will worsen the ability of the Russian Aerospace Forces (VKS) to launch missile and air strikes throughout Ukraine, experts say.

On the night of April 5, unmanned aerial vehicles attacked three airfields on the territory of the Russian Federation. We are talking about airports in Morozovsk, Rostov region, Engels, Saratov region, and Yeisk, Krasnodar region.

The press service of the Russian Ministry of Defense reported that at night the air defense allegedly destroyed 44 drones over the Rostov region, one each over the Saratov, Kursk and Belgorod regions and six over the Krasnodar Territory.

Director of the information and consulting company Defense Express Sergei Zgurets said that enemy airfields were attacked using Ukrainian-made long-range strikes. He noted that the airfield in Morozovsk is located 300 kilometers from the border, while in Engels 700 kilometers, and in Yeisk 150 kilometers.

Subsequently it became known that the attack on the airfield in Morozovsk was a joint operation of the SBU and the military. Thanks to the attack, at least six Russian bombers were destroyed – Su-24M, Su-34, and eight more were damaged. The enemy also lost about 20 Russian military personnel killed and wounded.
