NATO Secretary General stressed that decisions should be made by individual allied countries.
The decision to grant Ukraine permission to use long-range missiles supplied by the West will be made by individual allies.
This was stated to the journalist Andrew Marru, NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg, LBC reports.
“These decisions are for individual allies to make, but it is important that we consult closely on these issues, as we do,” NATO Secretary General Stoltenberg said.
The Secretary General recalled that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has long been calling on partners to provide such permission. In particular, this concerns the American long-range ATACMS missiles and the British Storm Shadows.
The day before, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and US President Joe Biden met in Washington on this matter. No decisions were announced following their talks.
“I welcome these developments and these decisions, but the final decisions must be made by individual allies. Allies have different policies on this issue,” Stoltenberg commented.
Stoltenberg also expressed concern about the escalation of the war. According to him, this was one of the reasons why Kyiv was not granted permission to use Western long-range weapons to strike targets inside Russia.
“We have a full-scale war in Europe, unleashed by Moscow. There are no risk-free options in war. But I continue to believe that the greatest risk for us will be if President Putin wins in Ukraine,” Stoltenberg said.
Recall that for a long time Ukraine tried to convince the US to allow strikes deep into Russia with American weapons. However, Kiev does not have this permission yet. This was stated by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
