Stone Age Beer Traces Found in China

by alex

Experts from Dartmouth College in the United States and the Zhejiang Institute for the Study of Cultural Relics and Archeology have discovered a culture of ritual beer drinking in China 9 thousand years ago.

During excavations in Zhejiang province, archaeologists discovered ceramic vessels with the remains of a drink. Many of the vessels could be held in hand, in addition, excavations were carried out in the Qiaotou burial, so scientists assume that they have discovered a funeral ritual with traces of beer drinking. According to scientists, the drink poured into vessels was made from rice. “The analysis of residues in pots from Qiaotou showed that these ceramic vessels were used for beer, in the most general sense – a fermented drink made from rice, a cereal called Iowle's tears, and unidentified root vegetables,” said one of the study co-authors, assistant professor at Dartmouth College, Wang Jiajing.

According to the source, experts say that such a culture could have originated in the New Stone or Stone Ages and influenced the further development of more complex societies that cultivate rice.
