Jens Stoltenberg
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg answered the question about the possibility of using nuclear weapons by NATO members in response to the use of biological weapons by a certain country in an interview with the Berliner Zeitung.
He was unable to accurately assess this likelihood, noting that it depends on the specific case. In this regard, Stoltenberg recalled the incident in Salisbury, when in March 2018, a former GRU officer Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia were found unconscious on the street. The NATO head considered Moscow to be involved in the incident and recalled that then Russian diplomats were simply expelled from several EU countries.
“It was a clear signal for Russia. NATO has no banned weapons, but we have a number of opportunities for an adequate response, ”Stoltenberg said.
London believes the Skripal family was poisoned by the Novichok nerve agent, Moscow denies the charges. In addition to them, the British Charlie Rowley and his wife Don Sturges were also affected. The couple was admitted to the same hospital where Skripali received treatment. The man recovered, but the woman died. In December, her family filed a lawsuit in the High Court of London over human rights violations by Russia.
