The dinosaur skeleton will be given to the museum.
Ken Griffin purchased an almost complete stegosaurus skeleton at Sotheby's auction for record $44.6 million.
The Wall Street Journal writes about this.
The skeleton of the stegosaurus named Apex is about 150 million years old. Paleontologist Jason Cooper discovered his remains in 2022 in Colorado. It is the most complete stegosaurus skeleton ever found, with 254 bones preserved out of approximately 319.
Apex's height is 3.4 m, and the length from nose to tail is 8.2 m. Initially, the skeleton was estimated at $6 million, because in 2021 the skeleton of a Triceratops nicknamed Big John was sold in Paris for about the same amount .
According to Sotheby's, the skeleton belonged to an adult dinosaur – although it is unknown whether it was male or female. The bones show signs of rheumatoid arthritis, meaning Apex lived to an old age. His bones are well preserved.
Commenting on the purchase, Griffin said he plans to donate the skeleton to an American museum.
“Apex was born in America, he will remain in America,” said the billionaire.
Recall that scientists reported that they had discovered a new species of tyrannosaurus, which was named Tyrannosaurus mcraeensis. It was a huge 12-meter dinosaur that weighed 10 tons and had a large mouth filled with many teeth.
