Gabe Newell, one of the founders of Valve, has confirmed that the portable Steam Deck has an SSD slot. However, it is not recommended to use it.
Gabe responded to user emails and was asked if it makes sense to buy the most expensive 512GB Steam Deck. It might be wiser to buy a cheaper version with less memory and install an SSD.
As it turns out, the Steam Deck does have a slot for an M.2 2230 SSD. This is the format of the smallest drives. These are rarely sold separately. Valve made it clear that regular users shouldn't be installing an SSD. Apparently, it would be wiser to fork out for the version of the console with the largest amount of memory.
