The President of Kazakhstan decided to introduce a state of emergency in Nur-Sultan from 5 to 19 January

President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Zhomart Tokayev, against the background of protests, introduced a state of emergency (state of emergency) in the capital of the republic from January 5 to 19, TASS reports.

The decree of the head of state says that the state of emergency was introduced in Nur-Sultan to ensure public safety, restore law and order, as well as protect the rights and freedoms of citizens.

In this regard, a curfew is being introduced in the city from 23:00 to 07:00.

Earlier, in connection with the protests in Kazakhstan, the state of emergency was introduced in the Almaty and Mangistau regions.

Protests in Kazakhstan began on Sunday, January 2, due to an increase in gas prices for cars from 60 to 120 tenge (from 10 to 20 rubles) per liter. The protesters demanded that the first president of the republic, Nursultan Nazarbayev, leave politics.

On January 4, clashes between protesters and security forces began, and riots took place in other cities of the country. Later Tokayev accepted the resignation of the government.

On January 5, in Aktobe, a crowd broke through a police cordon and broke into the Akimat building. Attacks on administrative buildings also took place in Shymkent and Taraz. There were broken windows, doors and material damage.
