State Duma calls new Whatsapp rules illegal and unethical

by alex

The new privacy policy for users of the WhatsApp messenger is contrary to ethics and Russian law, says Anton Gorelkin, a member of the State Duma Committee on Information Policy, Information Technology and Communications. WhatsApp has updated the user agreement with the addition of a clause on the transfer of personal data (phone number, transaction data and user's IP address) to Facebook.

“WhatsApp's new privacy policy is primarily unethical. They recruited users on the same conditions, and now they have presented everyone with the fact that the conditions will be different or they will lose their accounts, ”Mr. Gorelkin told TASS.

He recalled that a law has recently come into force, according to which the operator of personal data is obliged to ask the user's consent to transfer them to third parties. “WhatsApp does this formally. But in an ultimatum form, not giving the user a choice. In my opinion, this is a violation of the law, ”said Anton Gorelkin.

Today, May 15, WhatsApp will restrict the functionality of accounts for users who have not adopted the new rules. They will still be able to receive calls and receive notifications for a short period, but will no longer be able to read or reply to messages. Against the background of the renewal of the agreement, Roskomnadzor said that the WhatsApp messenger does not sufficiently protect the personal data of users.

Details about the change in the rules – in the material “Kommersant FM” “WhatsApp hangs up”.
