St. Petersburg is about to be hit by a massive flood. The water level outside the dam has already reached almost two meters.

What is known about the flood threat in St. Petersburg

The water level in the outer part of the Gulf of Finland in St. Petersburg has now exceeded 180 centimeters. The authorities are trying to do everything to prevent the city from being flooded.

In particular, now in St. Petersburg they have decided to completely close the dam gates, blocking the access of water from the Gulf of Finland. The movement of ships along the Kronstadt ship fairway has been stopped.

The cyclone brought a strong westerly wind to the city, uncharacteristic for the summer period. This created a threat of flooding. In St. Petersburg, gusts reached 19 meters per second, and in the waters of the Neva Bay – up to 27 meters per second. The height of the waves in some places was 2.5 meters.

It is known that the water has already flooded the surrounding cities. The worst situation is now in Sestroretsk, where the local park was flooded. The water level in the Neva is also predicted to rise.

Russian weather forecasters write that to this day in the history of St. Petersburg such weather conditions in July have only occurred once. It happened 160 years ago – on July 12, 1865.

Note that the day before, the main naval parade in St. Petersburg was cancelled. The decision was due to “security measures”
