Sri Lanka declares state of emergency and curfew amid mass protests

After the escape of the President of Sri Lanka to the Maldives, Prime Minister Ranil Wikramassingha announced the introduction of a state of emergency throughout the island.

The state of emergency was introduced amid protests and the flight of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa to the Maldives after his palace was stormed.

This is reported by Reuters.

“The Prime Minister, in his capacity as Acting President, has declared a nationwide state of emergency and imposed a curfew in Western Province,” said Dinook Kolombaj, the Prime Minister's secretary.

The curfew went into effect immediately. This happened after several hundred people demanding his resignation cordoned off the office of the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka in Colombo. The police used tear gas, and a military helicopter flew over the heads of the people, but this did not stop the protesters.

Recall, On July 9, thousands of protesters in Sri Lanka stormed the presidential palace. The country is facing its worst crisis in 70 years after its foreign exchange reserves collapsed, leaving the government short of dollars to pay for basic foreign goods, including food, medicine and fuel.
