Spinach May Protect Against Colon Cancer
The Texas Medical Science Center has concluded that eating spinach can prevent colon cancer, according to the journal Gut Microbes .
The study was conducted on rats with a genetic predisposition to adenomatous polyposis. When rodents ate spinach, their intestines showed significant anti-tumor activity, and fatty acids returned to normal levels.
Scientists believe this is due to an increase in the diversity of the microbiome (the collection of all microbes in the body) and changes in gene expression.
“The sooner the better. Don't wait for polyps to appear before starting prevention, ”explained lead author Roderick Dashwood.
Colon cancer is considered one of the most common cancers in the world, according to the World Health Organization. More than 500 thousand people are diagnosed with it every year.
Earlier, cardiologist Asiyat Khachirova said that types of red meat, including pork, beef, chicken thighs and drumsticks, can cause cancer and cardiovascular disease.
