Spiegel: German authorities threatened Telegram with a fine of 55 million euros

by alex

The German authorities demanded that the Telegram messenger indicate a contact person in Germany in order to be able to send requests to moderators to remove prohibited content. The owners of the messenger face a fine of 55 million euros, according to the magazine Der Spiegel.

The German Ministry of Justice said that Telegram must be accessible to the authorities, promptly remove illegal content and transfer user data to investigating authorities. Since the messenger does not have a contact person in the country, the German authorities fear that the application will continue to be used by hackers for illegal purposes.

According to German media reports, in the past month, investigators have repeatedly sent official inquiries to representatives of Telegram in Dubai, but there were no replies.

As the website kp.ru wrote, in March 2021, a case was opened against the messenger of billionaire Pavel Durov for publishing calls for teenagers to take part in illegal rallies. It was reported that Telegram could be fined 8 million rubles.
