The occurrence of positive tests at the EM could have dramatic consequences: Because national law takes precedence over UEFA rules, in some countries, in extreme cases, entire teams would have to be quarantined by order of the authorities.
And official measures for the local limitation of sources of infection can also be taken at short notice at any time, which makes it difficult to plan. The Uefa has therefore taken precautions and allows, for example, that players can be easily re-nominated. Moving games should also be relatively problem-free.
- A game can be kicked off as long as both teams have at least 12 healthy field players plus one goalkeeper available.
- For each additional player who is registered during the tournament to reach the minimum number of 13 players, the same number of quarantined players must definitely be removed from the 26-man roster.
- If a team cannot provide this minimum squad, the game can be rescheduled within the next 48 hours. “If a game has to be postponed but can take place in the same stadium, it will kick off the next day at 12 or 3 pm,” said UEFA tournament director Martin Kallen of the Swiss news agency Keystone-SDA. But there is also the option of switching to another stadium.
