The number of victims of the bad weather may still increase.
During search and rescue operations in the affected areas of Spain more and more bodies of the dead are being discovered. Dozens of people are still missing.
The Guardian reports on this.
Residents of the Valencia region have been warned of the risk of further rain, and a thousand more soldiers have been sent to help rescuers.
The downpours that began on Tuesday and continued on Wednesday have caused flooding in the south and east of Spain, from Malaga to Valencia. The water level has reached three meters.
The natural disaster has washed away bridges, cars and street lamps. There are missing people, but their exact number is unknown.
Thousands of local residents do not have access to clean water, food, electricity or communications, and some of the worst-hit areas are still unreachable. Piles of damaged vehicles and debris have trapped some residents in their homes.
Meanwhile, the Spanish government has sent an additional 500 troops to the affected areas to bolster the 1,200 already on site to carry out search, rescue and logistics tasks. Some cut-off areas are still without water, food and electricity, three days after the flooding began.
Many roads and railway lines have been damaged, making it impossible to quickly reopen them, adding to fears that the death toll will rise.
