Spain extradited Ecuadorian citizen accused of cocaine smuggling to Russia

An Ecuadorian citizen accused of smuggling and illegal sale of seven kilograms of cocaine was extradited to Russia by the competent Spanish authorities. This was reported by TASS with reference to the press service of the General Prosecutor's Office.

“Foreign colleagues, at the request of the Prosecutor General's Office of the Russian Federation, extradited Francisco Xavier to prosecute Cortes Quinones. He is accused of committing crimes under paragraphs “a” and “b” of part 4 of article 229.1 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (drug smuggling by an organized group on an especially large scale) and part 5 of article 228.1 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (illegal sale of drugs by an organized group on an especially large scale ) “, – said in the department.

According to the investigation, as noted in the Prosecutor General's Office, in October-November 2018, a citizen of Ecuador, Cortes Quinones Francisco Xavier, together with his accomplices on the Baltic Autumn motor ship, en route from the port of the South American city of Guayaquil to St. Petersburg, carried seven kilograms of cocaine. Subsequently, drugs were sold on the territory of Russia.

The department added that after the crime was committed, the man fled from law enforcement agencies and was put on the international wanted list. In June 2020, the accused was detained in Spain. Then the Prosecutor General's Office sent a request to foreign colleagues to extradite an Ecuadorian citizen, which was granted in February 2021.
