This device did not fly into space, and, nevertheless, history. A duplicate of the airlock for the scientific module of the orbital station “Mir” in 1989 was collected urgently. An abnormal situation arose in orbit: a hatch jammed in one of the compartments. In order for the astronauts to fix it, they first had to find a solution on earth.
“They recreated this camera, sent it to the hydro laboratory, placed it under the water. And there the cosmonauts in practically the same Orlan spacesuits were working out this very emergency situation, “said Pavel Gaiduk, senior researcher at the Moscow Museum of Cosmonautics.
Space history is here at every step, from 1931 to the present day: from the mock-ups of the first rockets of the Soviet Union to a magnetic 3D bioprinter – in 2019, astronauts printed muscle fibers on it in zero gravity.
There are thousands of exhibits. Moreover, not everything is visible in the museum – there is not enough space.
“In almost any museum you can find only 10% of what the museum really has. Conventionally, for our museum these are eight thousand items that are on display, and 80 thousand exhibits are stored in the funds, “Haiduk said.
The funds of the Moscow Museum of Cosmonautics are more than 8 thousand square meters underground. The museum was built at a depth of five meters.
Sergei Korolev spoke about the need to protect the space heritage. Shortly before his death, the founder of Soviet rocketry suggested a place for the construction of VDNKh. In 1964, a monument to the Conquerors of Space was erected here. Under it, a brilliant Soviet designer proposed to free up space for museum halls.
The doors of the Cosmonautics Museum opened 40 years ago. Then it was still small – only two rooms, but today its visitors can find themselves in the scientific and space library, and in a cafe, and in a conference hall. It's a paradox, but the museum, located underground, perfectly conveys the atmosphere of space.
“We are used to thinking that space is something unattainable, impossible. But when they find themselves here and can see all objects related to space as close as possible, when they pass through the exposition and can see a real astronaut. You feel a certain approach of outer space to you, “- Head of the Press Service of the Moscow Museum of Cosmonautics Daria Chudnaya.
The demand for cosmic knowledge and emotions is huge. The Moscow Museum of Cosmonautics is the most popular in the country in the scientific field. It is visited by 750 thousand people a year.
