South Korean President Officially Arrested: Investigators Prepare to File Charges

A court in Seoul has issued an arrest warrant for Yun Seok-yeol, fearing that the disgraced president could "destroy evidence" crimes.

On the night of Sunday, January 19, the Seoul Western District Court issued a warrant for the formal arrest of South Korean President Yoon Seok-yul, who was impeached in connection with his failed attempt to impose martial law.

This is reported by Yonhap News.

“The warrant was issued based on accusations that Yoon organized a coup and abused power when he declared martial law on December 3 and allegedly sent troops to the National Assembly to prevent lawmakers from vetoing his decree,” the report said.

The arrest warrant allows Yoon to be held in a Seoul pretrial detention center until 20 days since his arrest at his Seoul residence on Wednesday, January 15.

The disgraced president's case is currently being handled by the Chief Inquiry Office (CIO), and in 10 days the case will be transferred to the prosecutor's office, which intends to bring charges against him before the expiration of the warrant.

According to Reuters, the court issued an arrest warrant for Yoon Seok-yeol based on “concerns” that the ousted president will “destroy evidence” of his crimes.

On Wednesday, January 15, Yoon became the first sitting president of South Korea to be arrested. Investigators leading the Yoon mutiny case filed a warrant with the court after Yoon refused to cooperate with the investigation and answer during questioning.

“It is unclear whether Yoon will cooperate with investigators during his long-term detention,” the publication says.

Recall that on January 15, South Korea took President Yoon Seok-yeol into custody for the second time on charges of mutiny and attempting to illegally impose martial law. Yoon said he decided to submit to law enforcement, despite the fact that he considers the investigation against him illegal.
