South Korea will deploy laser weapons this year to shoot down North Korean drones.
In 2024, South Korea plans to become the first country in the world that will deploy laser weapons for military purposes.
This was reported by Reuters with reference to the Defense Procurement Agency (DAPA) of South Korea.
The Defense Acquisition Program Administration said in a statement that the weapon is effective, quiet, stealthy and cheap at $1.45 per shot.
“Our country becomes the first country in the world to deploy and operate laser weapons and our military's ability to respond to North Korean provocations using drones will be further enhanced,” writes DAPA.
The Agency called this weapon a game-changer for the future battlefield. The power of this weapon can be increased to meet ballistic missile threats and larger aircraft.
A DAPA spokesman explained that laser weapons shoot down drones by burning the drone's motors or other electrical equipment with beams of light for 10-20 seconds.
The system was assessed as suitable for combat operations in April last year after successful live-fire tests.
DAPA now plans to develop an improved version with increased power and range. The military is seeking to strengthen its ability to respond to small drones after five North Korean drones intruded across the inter-Korean border in December 2022.
Recall that South Korean President Yun Suk Yol began to seriously consider the issue of providing military assistance to Ukraine. This could be a significant breakthrough in supporting Ukraine in the fight against Russian aggression.
