South Korea will ban eating dogs: what is known

The popularity of dog meat consumption has plummeted in South Korea, especially among young people.

South Korea says it will ban the consumption of dog meat and plans to pass the law by the end of this year.

Sky News writes about this.

The law to end the traditional but controversial practice will have a three-year grace period, and dog meat will be completely banned from 2027.

Korea's practice of consuming dog meat has led to criticism from animal rights activists abroad, but resistance at home is also growing, especially from young people.

“It's time to put an end to social conflicts and controversies surrounding the consumption of dog meat by passing a special law aimed at stopping this consumption,” said politician Yoo Eui-dong.

The government and the ruling party will introduce a bill this year to enforce the ban, he said, adding that he is confident it will be passed.

Anti-dog meat bills have failed in the past due to industry protests and concerns about the livelihoods of farmers and restaurant owners.

The ban will contain a three-year grace period and financial support for businesses wishing to exit the trade.
