South America's football association (CONMEBOL) wants to vaccinate thousands of players against the corona virus. The association was receiving a donation of 50,000 vaccine doses from the Chinese manufacturer Sinovac, the association announced on Tuesday. This was intended to vaccinate professionals from the continent's top leagues, participants in the Copa America and other upcoming tournaments. “It is a big step forward to defeat the pandemic,” said President Alejandro Dominguez.

Receiving the vaccination doses was “good and important” news, wrote Dominguez on Twitter. Both South American men's and women's teams should benefit from the vaccination. The Copa America is to take place this summer parallel to the European Championship from June 11th to July 10th in Argentina and Colombia. The tournament had to be postponed by a year due to the corona pandemic and should now take place in front of a smaller number of spectators if possible.
