South African Health Minister Zveli Mhize said that his country intends to sell or exchange for another coronavirus vaccine produced by AstraZeneca Corporation. In total, the country's authorities have 1.5 million doses.

The study showed that the AstraZeneca vaccine shows minimal results in protecting against the South African strain of the coronavirus.

Experts from the World Health Organization continue to insist that countries in which the South African strain have been recorded continue to use all certified vaccines, including AstraZeneca, for vaccinations.

South Africa currently has 1.5 million cases of coronavirus and 47 thousand deaths from this disease, which is the highest rate in the entire African continent.

The South African strain of COVID-19 carries a mutation that makes it more infectious. But so far there is no evidence that it causes severe infections in infected people.

This strain has already been found in 20 countries around the world, including Austria, Japan, Norway and the UK. In South Africa, it accounts for up to 90% of new cases of coronavirus.
