Sony will re-release the legendary PSP

Sony plans to release a new version of the PlayStation Portable (PSP). Reported by the T3 edition.

According to sources, the corporation is interested in re-entering the portable set-top box market by re-releasing the legendary PlayStation Portable in gaming circles. Sony's top executives believe that the company could compete in this market segment with Nintendo, whose main product, the Switch hybrid console, remains in demand globally even after the release of a new generation of consoles.

Presumably, the console will be called PSP 5G, as it will support fifth generation networks. The console will be focused on cloud gaming, when the picture and other data from the game are broadcast from a specific remote server. 5G support is expected to provide high data rates and low latency, which is especially critical when streaming games.

With a focus on cloud gaming, the company doesn't have to equip a console with advanced hardware. In this case, Sony can save on components. There is also no need for the production of cartridges and physical copies of games, as all media content will be broadcast over the network.

Insiders believe that the library of the new PSP will consist of retro games and remasters. The console will also be able to run AAA titles from the PlayStation 4 and 5. The console is expected to be connected to the PlayStation Now subscription.

The journalists noted that the timing of the release of such a console was not disclosed. However, the Japanese company has serious plans for the PSP. Sony's top managers are not embarrassed by the fact that the previous portable set-top box – PS Vita – failed in sales.

The PlayStation Portable is a handheld game console with a built-in 4.3-inch display, controllers, and support for a Universal Media Disc (UMD) optical drive. The prefix was released on December 12, 2004.
