Almost 9 million people in the UK are suing Sony for overpricing its games.
Sony could face a massive lawsuit worth up to US$7.9 billion over allegations it abused its dominant position.
Reuters reports this.
Last year, a lawsuit was filed against Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) on behalf of nearly 9 million people in the UK who purchased digital games or additional content through Sony's PlayStation Store.
It is noted that the company abused its dominant position by requiring that digital games and add-ons be bought and sold only through the PlayStation Store, which takes a 30% commission from developers and publishers.
The lawsuit alleges that customers paid higher prices for games and additional content than they otherwise could have paid. Sony's lawyers argued the case was “false from start to finish” and said it should be dismissed.
However, the appeal tribunal allowed the case to continue. A verdict in this case could be the first step toward compensation for consumers. Sony has not yet responded to this decision.
Recall that billionaire Elon Musk's company X, formerly known as Twitter, filed a lawsuit against Media Matters and its author Eric Hananoki over an allegedly “deliberately false report” about anti-Semitism on the platform.
