Slump in sales of over EUR 217 million in the German Bundesliga

The German soccer Bundesliga recorded a drop in sales of more than 217 million euros last season due to the corona crisis. Mainly because of the lack of income in the last third of the season, the total turnover of the 18 first division clubs fell to 3.8 billion euros, as the German Football League (DFL) announced in its annual economic report on Tuesday.

In the years before that, the DFL was able to announce a sales record 15 times in a row. This series is now over, especially due to the lack of audience revenue due to the ghost games. In the case of ticket sales alone, revenues have fallen to 363.5 million euros, which is just under a third. For the current season, the DFL is expecting an even bigger minus, especially since there have also been significant losses on the transfer market. “The huge extent of the corona crisis hit all areas of life unprepared worldwide, including German professional football,” said DFL managing director Christian Seifert.

The clubs could build on an economic basis laid over the past 20 years. “In view of the enormous effects of the pandemic, disciplined and far-sighted economic action is still imperative for all clubs,” warned Seifert.
