Slovakia's opposition wants to hold no-confidence vote in Fico's government – Reuters

The power of Fico's coalition has been shaken, its advantage in parliament is only 2 votes.

Slovak opposition parties will announce a vote of no confidence in the government of Prime Minister Robert Fico. The opposition accuses the prime minister of “foreign policy rapprochement with Russia” and an inability to resolve domestic problems.

Reuters reports this, citing a statement by the leader of the largest opposition party, Progressive Slovakia, Michal Simečka, made at a press conference on Tuesday, January 14.

The authors of the article note that the power of Fico's left-wing nationalist coalition has been shaken in recent months. Its majority has shrunk to a minimum of 76 out of 150 seats in parliament. In addition, Fico is facing disagreements within the coalition.

It is not yet known when the vote might take place. To impeach the government, which would force Slovakia's president to appoint a new prime minister, the opposition needs a simple majority. Parliament could also agree to hold early elections, although such a move would require even greater support from both the opposition and the government camp.

The government faces serious domestic problems, including a high budget deficit, problems with the health care system and the interruption of Russian gas supplies via Ukraine, which Fico says has damaged Slovakia's economy.

The opposition was particularly outraged by Fico's pre-New Year trip to Moscow, where he met with Putin and then disappeared from public view for two weeks.

“Robert Fico has left Slovakia. Instead of being in his homeland and solving problems, he flies around the world and bows to dictators. And we [the opposition – ed.] want Slovakia to firmly established in the European Union and NATO,” Šimečka emphasized.

Recall that in Slovakia, schoolboy Simon Omanik, upon receiving an award for a prize place in a mathematical Olympiad, demonstratively refused to shake hands with the country's president, Peter Pellegrini.
