There was a petition for the return of the capital of its former name.
In the cities of Kazakhstan, which stirred up mass protests , they began to remove signs from residential buildings and buildings of organizations that mention the name of ex-president Nursultan Nazarbayev
This was reported by KazTAG agency.
It is noted that signs and other references to Nazarbayev began to be removed after the protests. The publication writes that marble tablets in Russian and Kazakh have disappeared near the building of the Nursultan Nazarbayev Foundation.
In the conference hall of the Almaty police building, the authorship was removed under the ex-president's quote. They also posted a photo from a meeting with the participation of the current president, Kasim-Jomart Tokayev.
By the way, so far in Almaty, local authorities have not restored the signs with the name of Nazarbayev on the avenue that bears his name.
The agency also writes that the petition for the return of the capital of Kazakhstan to its former name – Astana, brought down the site on which it was posted. Now the site has been relaunched, and the petition itself has been signed by more than 80,000 people.
It should be noted that Nazarbayev headed the country from 1990 to 2019. About two years ago, in March, he resigned. Extraordinary elections were held in the country. The victory was won by Kasim-Jomart Tokayev. In April 2021, Nazarbayev resigned as head of the Assembly of the People of Kazakhstan. In November last year, he stepped down as leader of the leading Nur Otan party.
Recall that since the beginning of January, violent protests continued in Kazakhstan, which escalated into armed clashes. One of their slogans was “Grandfather, go away”, which is addressed to Aliya's father Nursultan Nazarbayev. The ex-president has not appeared in public since then. However, he seems to support the actions of his successor, President Tokayev, who, in order to restore order in the country, invited the CSTO troops to Kazakhstan – from Russia, Belarus, Kyrgyzstan and Armenia. Since January 13, they have already begun to withdraw from the country.
