Signs of racism: streaming service Disney + has blocked cartoons about Peter Pan and Dumbo The company decided to fight against manifestations of racial discrimination.

Generations of children have been fascinated by the fairy tale of a boy who never grew up, but Peter Pan is now on the list of prohibited films. The 1953 animation classic is now locked on the Disney + streaming service for children under seven due to signs of racism.

The cartoons “Cats-aristocrats” and “Dumbo” also fell into disgrace. Parents have already complained that they could not watch the selected cartoons with children, even with paid accounts.

The story of Peter Pan is banned due to the fact that the Indians there are called Redskins. In the cartoon about cats, a Siamese cat named Shun Gon is depicted as too Asian. And in “Dumbo” the management of Disney + saw a mockery of black slaves.

Back in October, the service management decided to revise the company's old cartoons with the participation of external experts. According to the results of close viewing, it turned out that some of the paintings do not correspond to modern ideas about the fight against racial discrimination.

Moreover, a number of cartoons now contain a warning about scenes with racist elements at the beginning of viewing. Now such tapes are available for children under seven years old only with parental permission, writes the Daily Mail. Older children are probably able to independently assess the possible psychological stress from racist scenes.

Earlier, a dark-skinned ballerina from the United States, Misty Copeland, accused the Bolshoi of racism after posting on Instagram a photo of dancers disguised as African-American women – such an image was necessary for the performance of roles in the ballet La Bayadère. Copeland was outraged that there are no black ballerinas at the Bolshoi, which is why they have to make up white girls.
