Former chairman of the Supreme Soviet of Belarus Stanislav Shushkevich gave an assessment of Boris Yeltsin's activities as president of Russia. His statements are quoted by Ura.ru.
Shushkevich called Yeltsin a man who could be trusted. He also compared the first Russian president to former Pope John Paul II and former Polish leader Lech Walesa. “These are people whom they believed: they believed that first you need to go through the shock, then the therapy, and everything will be fine. Poland, the Baltic states are an example of this, ”Shushkevich said.
The former Belarusian leader also believes that Yeltsin was preparing people for the worsening situation in the country as a result of the change in the political system, and named his mistakes. “I think he had a lot of difficult, bad decisions. I do not want to talk about the Chechen wars – this is a terrible thing. About the default, about Gaidar and so on – I am not idealizing, I am not making a saint out of Yeltsin, ”the politician emphasized.
Shushkevich also called Yeltsin an open person, explaining what he was doing and doing better than he himself would have done. The ex-head of the Belarusian state added that his attitude towards his former Russian colleague has not changed.
Earlier, Shushkevich responded to the accusations of the collapse of the USSR, noting that it is important to remember the negative aspects of life in the Soviet state, which are now hushed up.
