Shopping bags return: plastic bags banned in Azerbaijan
Thin plastic bags are now banned in Azerbaijan. Sellers can be fined for them. The correspondent of MIR 24, Narmin Abasova, found out that instead of the usual packaging they use and have they found an alternative in supermarkets.
Shopping only with a cloth bag. Chimnaz Dadasheva believes that this is her small contribution to the protection of nature.
“I have long ago given up on excess bags in stores. After weighing, I wrap fruits and vegetables in cloth napkins. I believe that many will follow my example, ”said Chimnaz Dadasheva, a resident of Baku.
Now the new law obliges to abandon plastic bags with a thickness of 15 microns. For its violation, sellers face a fine of up to $ 880. Organizations will be punished for more than two thousand. “We have been waiting for this law since last year, so we ordered reusable eco-friendly shopping bags,” said the seller Aidan Dadasheva.
The use of plastic bags is a worldwide problem. In Azerbaijan, as in some other countries, the consumption of plastic packaging has increased. In ten months of 2020, almost 200 tons of polyethylene waste was received at the waste sorting plant in Baku. A few years ago, this garbage was burned at a landfill in the village of Balakhany. Now it is being sent for processing.
“Before burial, the waste is covered with geomembrane and geotextile shells to separate it from contact with the soil. And after that, there are special drainage systems that remove this waste water. It is filtered and converted into industrial water, which is used to irrigate trees, ”explained Elmar Melikov, head of the public relations department of the Clean City association.
